About the Eureka, McKinleyville, Ferndale, Blue Lake, Trinidad, Redway, Fortuna, Arcata and Humboldt CountyEureka Eureka has long and colorful history. Founded around 1850 and was home to a large fishing and timber industry for years. Old town Eureka was host to numerous brothel’s, bars and restaurants to entertain the loggers at the turn of the century. There was also a large port that is still a working seaport. More recently Eureka has become a great place for retires as well as home based industries. We have a small zoo at Sequoia park which has a marvous duck pond that we all remember as kids. Eureka weather is extremely mild and cool in the summer. But only 15 minutes away one can hit temperatures in the 90’s in Blue Lake or Field brook. Drive thirty minutes more and you will be in willow creek where temps will be even higher and another river to swim in. Eureka host the major shopping stores for the area, that include Costco, Target and the bayshore mall. We have several mom and pop type hardware store. For those interested the nearest Walmart and Home Depot you will find them 1.5 hours drive north in Crescent city. We have numerous movie theaters and a recently restored live theater. We have a wide range of educational opportunities for K to 12, from charter schools, private schools to public education.
Garberville/Redway Blue Lake (formerly, Scottsville)[1] is a city in Humboldt County, California, United States. Blue Lake is located on the Mad River 16 miles (26 km) northeast of Eureka,[1] at an elevation of 131 feet (40 m).[2] The population was 1,135 at the 2000 census. As of the census[3] of 2000, there were 1,135 people, 504 households, and 297 families residing in the city. The population density was 1,884.2 people per square mile (730.4/km²). There were 556 housing units at an average density of 923.0 per square mile (357.8/km²). The racial makeup of the city was 88.72% White, 0.53% Black or African American, 5.37% Native American, 1.32% Asian, 0.09% Pacific Islander, 1.15% from other races, and 2.82% from two or more races. 2.47% of the population were Hispanic or Latino of any race. There were 504 households out of which 27.4% had children under the age of 18 living with them, 41.9% were married couples living together, 13.7% had a female householder with no husband present, and 40.9% were non-families. 31.5% of all households were made up of individuals and 9.3% had someone living alone who was 65 years of age or older. The average household size was 2.25 and the average family size was 2.84. In the city the population was spread out with 21.9% under the age of 18, 8.4% from 18 to 24, 29.6% from 25 to 44, 27.7% from 45 to 64, and 12.4% who were 65 years of age or older. The median age was 39 years. For every 100 females there were 93.0 males. For every 100 females age 18 and over, there were 86.9 males. The median income for a household in the city was $32,500, and the median income for a family was $37,500. Males had a median income of $35,924 versus $25,563 for females. The per capita income for the city was $17,603. About 6.3% of families and 11.1% of the population were below the poverty line, including 13.0% of those under age 18 and 6.0% of those age 65 or over. Willow Creek Willow Creek is a rugged mountain community nestled in the heart of the Six Rivers National Forest. Just a 45-minute drive inland is an escape from the fog and cool temperatures on the coast during the summer. Located on the board of Humboldt and trinity counties. State Highways 299 and 96 are our access points to the outside world. Willow Creek is small comunity of 2,000 residents that was settled in the 1850's by pioneers in search of gold. At that time, the town was known as China Flat and served as a gold mining supply point. Friendly Fortuna is just about 20 minutes south of the Eureka and 10 minutes away from the Victorian village of Ferndale. It is host to a great Rodeo and the Auto Rama car show. Fortuna's residents enjoy a scenic rural atmosphere in a moderate climate with a range of services generally only found in large towns. Cultural and recreational activities abound. The area teems with outdoor activities. Enjoy a friendly game of golf and an afternoon of boating and swimming. Explore the Eel River Valley. Angle for steelhead, salmon and trout and discover why the North Coast offers some of the finest fishing in the country. Enjoy the peaceful Pacific Ocean breezes as you stroll along the clean, un-crowded beaches or explore one of the unlimited hiking trails in one of the near by state parks. Fortuna also has a great park in the city with lots of kids activities. Fortuna There is plenty of shopping in Fortuna, from Safeway to furniture stores. Fortuna is always growing but preserves it¡¯s downtown area. Bedroom communities of Fortuna are Hydesville, and Carlotta. They feature larger lot homes and mini ranch¡¯s. They also have an abundance of river front property. Fortuna homes range from down town walk able mid century homes to a gated forested subdivision with large newer homes with sweeping views of the valley and river. Fortuna is the opposite of Arcata in regards to political view points. This one thing the makes Humboldt County a great place to live in. The Victorian village of Ferndale is a city in Humboldt County, California, United States. The population was 1,382 at the 2000 census. It is very near the Lost Coast and towering Coast Redwoods. Ferndale is known for well-preserved Victorian buildings, which are also known as "Butterfat Palaces" due to their construction during an epoch wherein considerable wealth was generated in the dairy industry, especially during the 1880s. The entire town is an historical landmark. As of the census[5] of 2000, there were 1,382 people, 611 households, and 392 families residing in the city. The population density was 1,343.2 people per square mile (518.1/km©÷). There were 663 housing units at an average density of 644.4 per square mile (248.5/km©÷). The racial makeup of the city was 93.34% White, 0.29% Black or African American, 0.51% Native American, 0.58% Asian, 0.07% Pacific Islander, 1.30% from other races, and 3.91% from two or more races. 4.27% of the population were Hispanic or Latino of any race. There were 611 households out of which 25.7% had children under the age of 18 living with them, 53.0% were married couples living together, 9.3% had a female householder with no husband present, and 35.8% were non-families. 30.1% of all households were made up of individuals and 14.9% had someone living alone who was 65 years of age or older. The average household size was 2.26 and the average family size was 2.83. In the city the population was spread out with 22.8% under the age of 18, 6.9% from 18 to 24, 24.2% from 25 to 44, 29.5% from 45 to 64, and 16.6% who were 65 years of age or older. The median age was 43 years. For every 100 females there were 86.5 males. For every 100 females age 18 and over, there were 81.8 males. The median income for a household in the city was $37,955, and the median income for a family was $49,706. Males had a median income of $32,404 versus $29,808 for females. The per capita income for the city was $21,727. About 4.5% of families and 7.1% of the population were below the poverty line, including 9.9% of those under age 18 and 3.6% of those age 65 or over. Ferndale is located at 40¡Æ34¡Ç34¡ÈN 124¡Æ15¡Ç50¡ÈW / 40.57611¡ÆN 124.26389¡ÆW / 40.57611; -124.26389.[1] Its location south of US 101, is very close to the mouth of the Eel River as it enters the Pacific Ocean. By car, Ferndale is 265 miles (426 km) north of San Francisco and just 12 miles (19 km) south of Eureka. According to the United States Census Bureau, the city has a total area of 1.0 square miles (2.7 km©÷), all of it land. Arcata The square is the social point of Arcata, numerous festivals: events are held there. The buildings surrounding the square are home to some great shopping, from fine art to hiking equipment. Just a short walk away is the campus of Humboldt University. It is considered one of the best values in the state for an education. Arcata being home to Humboldt State University gives it a college town energy and feel. There are two major health food grocery stores besides health sport fitness center. As with Eureka, Arcata has a wide range of educational opportunities for K-12. Jacoby creek school district is highly prized and many small charter schools are also available. The Arcata Eye, and the North Coast Journal of two of the local papers. They are always fun to read and full of useful information, as well as offering unique view points. Houses in Arcata are varied from historical Victorians within walking distance to the square or newly constructed homes in the forested hills above with sweeping views of the city and bay. Arcata has the distinction of having its own working community forest. Recently the city added even more acreage to it. They actively manage the forest from reforestation to harvesting. The city also has business park that has is home to numerous startup and growing cottage industries. Arcata is a very progressive city, sometime being at the forefront of new legislation. They even have a limit of how many franchise business can operate. McKinleyville is now a bedroom community with mainly retail and professional businesses to serve its residents. Major entertainment, county services, educational facilities and local industry can be found in nearby Arcata and Eureka. Property values increased dramatically in the late 1990s and the early first decade of the 21st century, and the larger McKinleyville community has experienced gentrification. The community has discussed incorporating into a city in the past, but long term plans have not materialized. As of the census[3] of 2000, there were 13,599 people, 5,277 households, and 3,604 families residing in the CDP. The population density was 651.4 people per square mile (251.5/km²). There were 5,494 housing units at an average density of 263.2 per square mile (101.6/km²). The racial makeup of the CDP was 87.64% White, 0.38% Black or African American, 4.56% Native American, 1.07% Asian, 0.06% Pacific Islander, 1.66% from other races, and 4.63% from two or more races. 4.33% of the population were Hispanic or Latino of any race. There were 5,277 households out of which 34.5% had children under the age of 18 living with them, 50.9% were married couples living together, 12.1% had a female householder with no husband present, and 31.7% were non-families. 21.7% of all households were made up of individuals and 7.0% had someone living alone who was 65 years of age or older. The average household size was 2.58 and the average family size was 3.01. In the CDP the population was spread out with 26.4% under the age of 18, 9.5% from 18 to 24, 30.9% from 25 to 44, 22.5% from 45 to 64, and 10.8% who were 65 years of age or older. The median age was 35 years. For every 100 females there were 95.9 males. For every 100 females age 18 and over, there were 90.4 males. The median income for a household in the CDP was $38,047, and the median income for a family was $42,926. Males had a median income of $35,395 versus $24,385 for females. The per capita income for the CDP was $17,870. About 11.7% of families and 14.9% of the population were below the poverty line, including 15.9% of those under age 18 and 5.1% of those age 65 or over McKinleyville also boats some beautiful trails: Hammond Trail, Azalea State Reserve, Pierson Park, Hiller Park, and Clam Beach County Park.
